“Leadership and influence are among the most powerful forces shaping the world. They move nations, ignite change, and inspire individuals to rise above limitations.” (ChatGPT)
Nicely worded, I requested the inspirational version from ChatGPT. I think it’s accurate. If I insert the word “Poor” at the beginning and add “not” just before “rise,” it would also be accurate.
The assumption often made when leadership is mentioned is that we are being led to a “better” place or state of being. Human history demonstrates that this is often not the case. All leadership, at its core, begins with self-leadership. Poor self-leadership limits our influence and quality of life. Where does good self-leadership begin?
To be a good leader, I must start with myself. Do I lead myself well? If a leader isn’t taking care of themselves, they won’t lead anyone effectively or far. If I want a healthy team, I need to be a healthy leader. It begins when I make the decision to BE someone who values and respects myself. Valuing and respecting yourself is not selfish; rather, it is the foundation upon which all selfless action is taken. Why should I care about you if I don’t care about myself? If you’re not taking care of yourself physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually, you will have little to no capability to help anyone else in a sustained manner.
It begins when I make the decision to BE someone who values and respects myself.

How to get started -
Imagine standing on one of these stools. Which one would you pick?
I would choose the stool on the far right because it has 4 sturdy legs. The legs represent elements of our life.
Physical health
Emotional health
Social health (a.k.a. our community)
Spiritual health

I build and strengthen each of these by engaging in practices that build healthy function. Healthy function in these key areas is the foundation upon which transformational leadership rests. Effective leadership begins with self-leadership in each of these elements of our life.
When I make the decision to BE someone who values and respects myself, I begin to unlock my potential for personal transformation. My actions and behaviors reveal my beliefs about myself and the world. If I'm going to BE someone who values and respects myself, I need to act and behave in a way that aligns with my stated desire.
Standing on a one legged stool requires a lot of effort and isn't sustainable. If we focus our attention and effort on one foundational element we might see growth, but it's not stable or sustainable. And we're also neglecting the three other pillars that support healthy function.
Sustainable transformation and effective self-leadership is built on daily and weekly practices in EACH key element. It doesn't have to be difficult, but it does need to be consistent. Go for a walk outside, connect with a friend, open a door for someone, and in the evening reflect with gratitude on your day. If you do so, you will have engaged each of these elements. The next day you might choose to walk farther, or maybe faster; listen more closely to your friend and affirm their healthy choices; take 10 minutes out of your day to help someone; and add 10 minutes of meditation and prayer to the end of your day. It can be that simple, it simply requires our intention and our awareness.
Don't let poor self-leadership shape your world, hold you back, or limit your journey. Be strong, courageous, and take a step in the direction of the person you want to BE.
